Who this is for
Quantity surveyors, cost consultants, and claims professionals in India, UAE, and the GCC who've heard of Claude or ChatGPT but haven't found a way to use it for the actual job, BOQ prep, rate analysis, variation claims, arbitration reports, not emails and summaries.
Why I wrote this
I've spent 17+ years doing takeoffs, running rate analysis, and sitting through arbitration hearings where a single wrong quantity decided who paid what.
In the last year, I started using Claude for a chunk of that work. Not to replace judgment, that's still mine and always will be. But the part where I'm turning rough site notes into a structured BOQ, or building a variation log from a pile of drawing comparisons, that part got faster.
People in my network kept asking the same question: "What do you actually type into it?" So I wrote it down.
What's Inside
18 prompts, organized the way a QS actually works.
Quantity takeoff, BOQ prep, and RFI drafting, including a prompt for item descriptions matching NRM/CESMM-4 wording exactly
Rate analysis and cost benchmarking, with a full worked example built from a real priced BOQ
IFC vs tender drawing audits and design-stage risk flagging
Variation, delay, and final account claim structuring
Arbitration document review and causation evidence for damage claims
Client communication, commercial progress reporting, and building your own small QS tools
8 of the 18 sections include a full worked example: the actual prompt, what Claude gave back, and what I had to check or correct before using it. Drawn from real engagements across India, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and New Zealand, adjusted so they aren't traceable to a specific client.
Why a QS is writing this, not a tech company
"I'm not a technologist, and I'm not about to become one. I'm a QS who got tired of retyping the same structure every time a variation log needed building, and found a tool that did the retyping for me."
None of what's in here replaces judgment. All of it removes the blank page.
